Hair Extensions
Dr. Khushboo Zafar Kadri MD
CONSULTANT AESTHETICIAN
“Oh Doc!!! please give me something to make my hair grow really long QUICKLY!” Haven't we all heard this
multiple times in our practice? Practitioners resort to multivitamins along with the latest growth
factors with Capixyl , Stemoxidyine or just the time tested Minoxidil. All these would just help her boost
her volume up to some degree. The effectiveness of all these medications would depend on the
compliance of the patient and definitely is not a quick fix to give her the Rapunzel hair she longs for.
Now there is a simple, quick solution for all patients with this desperation. This quick fix solution is
called as Hair Extensions, also known as Artificial Hair Integration. This increases the length and
volume of one’s hair by incorporating synthetic or human hair.
Nowadays good quality human hair is available at affordable prices which can be styled or coloured just
like your natural hair. In addition, they merge so easily with your existing hair that it would be impossible
for someone to tell what’s real and what’s not. We all want cosmetic treatments to look as natural as
possible so that the secret is safe.
A brief rundown of different options - the type, quality and cost:
Premium Hair: It is the most popularly available extension as it is inexpensive and easily available in beauty
stores as well as online. The tips and the roots are interwoven which causes tangling due to opposing
cuticles in the regular premium hair.
“Tangle free” Premium hair is also available where the cuticles are removed chemically using an acid bath and
then a laminate is used in order to make the hair look shiny and healthy.
Synthetic Hair (fibre): Various types of synthetic fibres are used to create human looking hair but these
fibre hair extensions can't withstand heat and friction like the human hair.
Futura: Futura is a synthetic fibre which is very similar to human hair, its tangle free can withstand
heat upto 400F. It can be styled but not coloured.
Human Hair: Depending on the quality and intactness of cuticle they are available as Low, High and
Virgin Remy. Virgin hair is completely unprocessed and the best human hair available and hence the most
expensive.
